Black Diamond Lost Arrow Pitons
The Black Diamond Lost Arrow hard metal piton has a classic, solid, tapered shape that performs well in small to medium sized cracks and the smaller sizes are essential pegs on your aid rack. They excel in small cracks too small for an angle, but too big for a Pecker or Tomahawk - if a Moses Cam Hook, DMM Brass Offsets or a micro cam won’t fit then the Lost Arrow is there for you. It is still a staple of any nailing rack and has been since John Salathé first came up with the design.
Lost Arrows are extremely durable and you can use them for years and they just keep going. Eventually you will wear down the eyes, but it will take a long time. They are generally easier to clean than angles and most other pitons.
The downside is they are heavy when compared to angles, Peckers and Tomahawks. Plus they do not work nearly as well in sandstone as most other pitons.
The first three sizes of these pitons are really useful whereas sizes #4-6 are more for specialty aid racks.
