Mountain

Equipment and systems for vertical access, mobility and assault capability in the mountains.

Military operations in mountainous or mountain-like terrain present unique challenges that require a thorough understanding of the environment. Unlike other terrains where warfare takes precedence and the environment plays a secondary role, mountainous terrain shifts the balance, making the environment itself the primary goal. Warfare, in this context, becomes one of many factors shaped by these challenging conditions, influencing strategy and tactics for dismounted troops.

Operational success relies on specialist training and well-considered equipment choices. Troops must be able to assess the challenges and be prepared for the fragmented, compartmentalised nature of the terrain in order to maintain freedom of manoeuvre. Lightweight, adaptable equipment that integrates with an operator’s load carriage system is essential—maximising mobility, endurance, and operational effectiveness.

Rigging

Establishing secure, reliable anchor systems is essential for all military vertical access tasks—such as abseiling, climbing, hauling, and rescue—especially in challenging mountainous terrain. Anchors must be quickly set on varied, often unstable surfaces, and may include artificial high-directional equipment. Modern materials and manufacturing advances ensure gear remains strong, lightweight, and usable even in low-light conditions, meeting the tactical needs of mountain operations.

CTOMS Quickie Ascender

Rope grab with an integrated pulley that is used for ascending and hauling with the CTOMS 6mm Technora rope. It incorporates force reduction into the system through slippage at a specific force window.

CTOMS 6mm TRACE

The CTOMS Trace system allows users to lead climb, abseil, and haul rescue loads on a 6mm rope that is fire resistant up to 500c and has superb cut and abrasion resistance.

Abseiling

Military abseiling is vital for operations in steep or vertical terrain, allowing troops to access hard-to-reach areas, descend safely, and navigate natural obstacles. Systems must be intuitive in low-light conditions, lightweight yet durable, support combat loads, and integrate with existing load carriage equipment.

Traditional (Trad) Climbing

Trad climbing is a specialised mountain skill used by military troops to ascend natural rock without fixed protection. Unlike sport climbing, it involves placing and removing gear like cams and slings during the climb, offering adaptability in complex terrain. It's essential for reaching high positions, setting observation posts, and creating vertical access routes. Military equipment is custom or adapted from commercial gear, designed to be lightweight, durable, low-visibility, and compatible with combat loads and other rigging systems for safe use in remote, high-risk environments.

DMM Dragon Cam

Single stem, dual axle design gives Dragon cams 360° flexibility and a substantial expansion range, increasing performance in sub-optimal placements and helping you get the right piece first time.

The systems we provide allow units to move over mountain terrain, climb rock, ascend, rappel, navigate, haul supplies and cross ravines or fast flowing water. All with kit that will integrate with operational equipment whilst minimising the weight burden and pack size that needs to be carried.

This ability to deliver a cutting-edge capability derives from a heritage of almost 40 years manufacturing climbing equipment in the mountains of Snowdonia together with
close ties to mountain rescue teams, mountain professionals and specialist mountain troops.
